Chapter 14
Ben
Every muscle in my upper body is burning. Sweat stings my eyes, and my lungs are straining.
“The draft combine is tough,” Jaegar tells Flash, Rocket, and me. “You’re going to have to train hard for it. There are guys who puke when they’re done with the VO2 Max bike test.”
I’ve heard this.
The top one hundred prospects get invited to the combine, and apparently all three of us are on that list. Fuck me.
Not only are there a bunch of fitness tests and medical testing, we have to do psychological testing and interviews with the teams who are interested in us. Like freaking job interviews. Fuck me harder.
This only fuels my determination to succeed. I can see Flash feels the same. Rocket is so laid back, I don’t know why he’s not shitting pucks about it, but he still seems surprised he’s even in this position. I almost envy him. What would it be like to go into this with no expectations?
Because, fuck, I’m going to be devastated if it doesn’t work out.
Jaegar has met with us three guys individually to help us prepare physically for the combine. Right now he’s fucking torturing us with pull-ups. “One day you’ll thank me for this,” he says with an evil grin. “One more.”
Jesus. I’ve heard about the Hell Week that Navy SEALs go through, and it can’t be any worse than this. Okay, we’re not rolling around in sand, or swimming with our hands tied behind our back, but fuck! My muscles are screaming and trembling as I strain to pull myself up one more time, working on keeping my form perfect.
I’ve also been working on strengthening my grip, as that was causing me problems earlier in the year.
I lower myself and fall to the mat, stretching out flat on my back, staring up at the high gym ceiling, barely aware of the pumping rhythm of a Drake song. “I don’t think I can move.”
“Me either,” Flash says.
I lift my head to peer at Rocket, his dreads spread out on the mat. His eyes are closed. Apparently he can’t even speak.
As I lay there, my heaving chest slowly returning to normal, my mind drifts to Ella.
I haven’t seen her since Sunday afternoon, but we’re friends on Facebook, and I have to admit I’ve been stalking her there. She hasn’t posted a lot, just a couple of cute status updates, one a video of a ridiculously adorable puppy that looks like a teddy bear, the other a face swap picture of her and Skylar that bordered on creepy.
I didn’t want to call her the very next day. I waited out Tuesday too. Now it’s Wednesday, and I messaged her before I got to the DeWitt Center to see if she wants to go out for coffee tonight. My phone is in my locker, unavailable to me, and it’s making me antsy.
“Okay, you guys, get off your butts,” Jaegar says.
With a sigh, I use my quivering abs to sit and roll to my feet. I swipe a hand across my forehead and back into my sweaty hair.
